Pioneer Woodsmen Team Competes at FLCC Home Meet

Alfred State College’s Pioneer Woodsmen team recently competed with 21 other teams at Finger Lakes Community College’s home meet which was held at Cummings Nature Center in Naples. Alfred State sent four teams: a men’s 1 team, a men’s 2 team, a women’s team, and a Jack-and-Jill team. Other colleges competing included Finger Lakes Community College, SUNY Cobleskill, Environmental Science and Forestry, Paul Smith’s College, and the Wanakena Ranger School.

Competition was tight at this event with Paul Smith’s College taking first in the overall men’s division and Alfred State taking a respectable sixth place; in the women’s division Alfred State took 5th place and 3rd place in the Jack-and-Jill division. Alfred State was able to take 1st place in the men’s bow saw and log toss for distance while the Jack-and-Jill team took 1st place in: chain saw race, “crosscut to hell event” (six consecutive cuts), bow saw, log roll and deck and pulp toss event. The teams were pleased with the results as this is only the second year for the team and the fourth competition overall.

“This season, Alfred State welcomed more than 50 people to the team which is still in its infancy,” said UP Officer Scott Bingham, club adviser. “With practices starting in September, the group had only a short period of time to form competitive teams, especially since more than half of our members had never competed before. We look forward to another successful year as our teams hone their lumberjack skills.”
