Late Innings Cost Pioneers

The Alfred State College baseball team had leads in both games of a doubleheader heading into the 5th inning but saw their opponents rally for victories. ASC, 3-3 on the young season, fell 10-3 to Massasoit (MA) CC and 10-4 to North Iowa Area CC in Cocoa, FL.

Pioneers Bounce Milwaukee Area

Tyler Ward (Rochester/Bishop Kearney) earned his first collegiate victory as the Alfred State College baseball team defeated Milwaukee (WI) Area Tech 6-1 in Cocoa, FL.  The Pioneers improve to 3-1 on the season.

Ward allowed just three singles in six innings of work to earn the victory.  He walked four and struck out four batters.  He was helped by an 11 hit offensive attack.  Brian Zimmermann (Frontier) was 3 for 4 with two triples while JP Frey (Erie, PA/McDowell) and Kyle Barkley (Penn Yan) were each 2 for 4.

The Alfred State College baseball team fell 6-1 to ASA Institute (Brooklyn, NY) late Sunday evening in Cocoa, FL.  The loss drops the blue & gold to 2-1 on the season.

Brent Johnson (Penn Yan) allowed two earned runs in 6.1 innings of work.  He walked three and struck out five.  JP Frey (Erie, PA/McDowell) collected two hits while Brian Zimmermann (Frontier) scored the lone run.

ASC returns to action on Monday afternoon when they take on Milwaukee Area Technical College at 4 p.m.

Lady Pioneers Split Season Opener

The Alfred State College softball team defeated Genesee CC 10-2 and fell 11-1 to Herkimer CCC as they opened up their 2010 season in Myrtle Beach, SC.

In the opener versus GCC, Charise Nankivell (Hornell) earned the victory on the mound and chipped in to the offensive attack.  Nankivell allowed five singles and one earned run in six inning of work while striking out five to earn her first collegiate victory.  At the plate she was 2 for 4 with an RBI. 

Pioneers Win First Two in Florida

After having the first two days of their spring trip washed out the Alfred State College baseball team opened up their 2010 season with two victories.  ASC downed Montgomery (MD) Rockville) 14-5 on Saturday evening and then downed Massasoit (MA) CC 4-3 on Sunday.

Rain Washes Baseball Openers

The Alfred State College baseball team will have to wait another day for their 2010 season opener as games on Thursday evening and Friday have been rained out.  The Pioneers will look to get on the field on Saturday to open up their spring campaign.

Pioneers Lacrosse Wins Opener

The Alfred State College lacrosse team started the Mark Kanellis era with a convincing 14-4 victory over Cayuga CC in Syracuse on Thursday evening.  ASC jumped out to a 8-1 lead in the first half to cruise to the victory in Kanellis' first game as head coach.

James Moss (Hilton) led the blue & gold's offensive attack with five goals.  Tony Micelotta (Irondequoit) and Chase Bailey (Corning West) each scored twice while Ryan Speciale (Corning West) and Mike Harris (Maine Endwell) each passed out two assists.

Kanellis Era Begins Thursday

The Mark Kanellis era of Alfred State College lacrosse begins on Thursday evening as the Pioneers battle Cayuga CC in their 2010 opener.  Kanellis will count on 13 returning players to lead the blue & gold back to the Region III Tournament.

The Mark Kanellis era of Alfred State College lacrosse begins on Thursday evening as the Pioneers battle Cayuga CC in their 2010 opener.  Kanellis will count on 12 returning players to lead the blue & gold back to the Region III Tournament.

Kanellis, a Nazareth College grad hired at ASC this fall, returns two of the programs top five scorers from the 2009 season.  Ryan Speciale (Corning West) netted 37 goals and passed out 15 assists last year while Tony Micelotta (Irondequoit) finished with 21 goals and 20 assists.

Pioneers Finish 14th at Swim Nationals

Both the men's and women's Alfred State College swim teams finished 14th at the NJCAA National Championships held at Indian River State College in Fort Pierce, FL. The men scored 40 points in the four day competition while the women scored 7.

Ashley Andrus (Cuba Rushford) placed in her third event of the competition on Saturday.  She finished 13th in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:32.36.
