The award, now celebrating its third class of awardees, recognizes outstanding EOP students for their academic merit and strength in overcoming significant personal obstacles throughout their lives.

Tammy Brackett, professor and chair of the Alfred State College (ASC) Digital Media & Animation department, had one of her pieces featured in the Memorial Art Gallery’s 67th Rochester-Finger Lakes Exhibition.

Tammy Brackett, professor and chair of the Alfred State College (ASC) Digital Media & Animation department, had one of her pieces featured in the Memorial Art Gallery’s 67th Rochester-Finger Lakes Exhibition.

Brackett’s piece, Untitled #1 (remnant), was part of an exhibition that was on display at the Memorial Art Gallery.

On top of having her work displayed, Brackett took part in the Rochester-Finger Lakes Artist Talks! At the event, fellow artists Corinne Spencer and Michael Darcy joined her to discuss their work.

Professor Jeremy Speed Schwartz’s film earns multiple awards

Alfred State Associate Professor of Digital Media and Animation Jeremy Speed Schwartz recently received a pair of awards for his short film titled, “The Land of the 3-Drink Minimum.”

Specifically, the film earned a silver award in the Animation category at the 2019 Chautauqua International Film Festival, and an award for “Outstanding Western NY Micro-Short” at the Buffalo Dreams Fantastic Film Festival. The film originally premiered at the Athens Animfest in March and had its North American Premiere at the Detroit International Festival of Animation in April.

Expert level achieved

As an avid gamer, Eric Doty always knew he wanted to pursue a career in video games.

While it may have taken a few years of education and experience to level up his knowledge and skills, Eric now finds himself living out his passion every day as a game design industry professional within the Greater Los Angeles area. Today, he is the head of product at Mobcrush, a technology and entertainment company at the epicenter of gaming, live streaming, and the creator-driven media revolution.

Gaming enthusiasts gather at Alfred State for Esports event

Alfred State College and its newly launched Esports team recently welcomed 23 students from five area high schools for a fun and informative event that focused on the growing world of competitive gaming.

Schools that attended the first Alfred State Esports Invitational included Dundee, Wellsville, BOCES Wildwood, Alfred-Almond, and Spencer-Van Etten. Participants began their day by touring the new Esports Suite in the Student Leadership Center and by playing several different games under the guidance of the college’s Esports team.

Game and interactive design programs coming to Alfred State in fall 2019

Course work in these majors will cover the breadth of interactive design from AAA (triple A) game titles to the interactions of application interfaces. Skills developed are applicable to the growing fields of user experience (UX) design, application design, web design, data visualization, and interactive entertainment.

From video games, to websites, to applications, Alfred State College’s new game and interactive design programs will expose students to many different facets of interactive media, and will also prepare them for a number of rewarding careers in this field.

Classes for these new Associate of Science (AS) and Bachelor of Science (BS) programs will begin in the fall 2019 semester. The programs will offer a hands-on, studio-based approach to design, programming, and storytelling.

Jeremy Speed Schwartz, an associate professor in the Digital Media and Animation Department, was part of a group of artists that recently received a Lumen Prize for Digital Art. “Degenerative Cultures,” by Cesar & Lois with Jeremy Speed Schwartz, was honored with the British Computer Society Artificial Intelligence in Digital Art Award.

DMA students awarded for video made in Tokyo

“Mittashane,” an animated video created by Alfred State College students while studying abroad in Toyko, recently won “Best Animated Short” at the Western New York Film Arts and Music Event (FAME) held at Genesee Community College.

According to Jeremy Speed Schwartz, associate professor of Digital Media and Animation, Mittashane is a 5-minute music video for Castro House, a band based out of western Tokyo. It was created in 2016 by students within the Digital Media and Animation (DMA) Department who participated in Alfred State’s Studio Tokyo study-abroad offering.

Over winter break, Alfred State College students of digital media and animation (DMA), along with Associate Professor Jeremy Speed-Schwartz, explored art, cinema, and animation in Japan as part of the college’s Studio Tokyo program.

During the two-week experience, 18 students collaborated with Meiji University Professor Kentaro Fukuchi and his digital arts students. According to Speed-Schwartz, the group was invited to Fukuchi’s lab on the Nakano Campus of Meiji University to share their projects and see work from his students, including virtual reality and 360-degree video work.
