Sustainability is a top priority at Alfred State College. That’s why over the past eight years, the school has taken a number of ecofriendly steps to reduce its environmental footprint, while increasing energy efficiency on campus.

“The college has a long history of being a leader in sustainability, including classroom instruction, building a Zero Energy Home on the Wellsville campus, and leading a $2.8 million NYSERDA grant on clean energy training across New York State,” said Dr. Craig Clark, vice president of Economic Development at Alfred State. “We look forward to continuing to lead through the REV process.”

Through evaluating building-by-building benchmarks, the college as a whole performed very well in the Preliminary Energy Analysis report which was not weather-normalized. According to the analysis, out of seven similar-sized SUNY campuses, Alfred State’s energy consumption is noticeably lower than five of them, and ties results for first place.

The newest member of Alfred State’s growing renewable energy family is currently catching the breeze above campus—a 100 kilowatt grid-tied wind turbine that will offset some of the college’s electricity usage. The turbine came online just a few weeks ago and is already producing clean, green energy.

Team Alfred designed their home to go beyond what previous decathlon homes had done, combining cutting-edge engineering with traditional Chinese architecture, and they succeeded, walking away with a first-place award in energy balance and an incredible hands-on work experience.
