Students needing professional clothing have a new place to go at Alfred State College (ASC). The Career Development Center in partnership with the Kappa Sigma Epsilon fraternity have teamed up to open Professional Pioneers Place.

A group of Kappa Sigma Epsilon fraternity members from Alfred State College recently participated in a trail maintenance event for I Love NY Parks Day.

Members of the Alfred State College, Alfred University, and Alfred village community came together virtually for the 10th annual Celebration of Service Ceremony to honor recipients of the Spirit of Service Award.  

Spring Into Action Day of Service, an annual community service event co-sponsored by Alfred University’s Gary Horowitz Service Learning Program and Alfred State College’s Center for Civic Engagement, returned this year after a hiatus in 2020 due to the global pandemic.

“This program is a great way for new students to connect with their community, help out, and build relationships with others in their new home,” Jonathan Hilsher said.

“I was impressed with how the students were so dedicated to helping,” she said. “The students were eager to get their hands dirty and make an impact on the community. As students who are familiar with hands-on learning, they jumped right into the tasks they were assigned on day one," said Amy Miller.

According to Jonathan Hilsher, director of Civic Engagement, “This designation is an extension of Alfred State’s focus on preparing involved students for successful careers and purposeful lives."

Recently, 98 students participated in the school’s Community Action Day, the annual day of service that takes place during the college’s Week of Welcome, in which new students engage in a number of local community service projects.

Twelve Alfred State students, two retired faculty members, one current faculty member, and a community volunteer made the trip to Texas last month to partner with disaster relief organization All Hands and Hearts – Smart Response in making a difference in the community.

One way in which Alfred State pays tribute to Dr. King is by honoring those who represent his spirit of service. This year, the college will host its eighth annual Spirit of Service Award Ceremony at 5 p.m. Jan. 30 in the community room at the Union University Church, 29 N. Main St., Alfred.
