A total of 52 students from two schools competed against each other in one of the nation’s most prestigious showcases of career and technical aptitude.

Gaining the skills and knowledge they need to defend themselves, seven participants recently successfully completed the Rape Aggression Defense (RAD) course at Alfred State College (ASC).

Campus Compact, a Boston-based non-profit organization working to advance the public purposes of higher education, has announced the 268 students who will make up the organization’s 2018 cohort of Newman Civic Fellows, including Alfred State College’s own Hannah Weaver.

All shows will take place at the Alfred State Lake Lodge, 6107 Terbury Road in Alfred Station. Tickets are available in the Student Leadership Center and the Alfred Campus Store. Dinner theater tickets must be purchased by March 30.

Mathew Watson, a 2017 graduate of the Bachelor of Architecture (BArch) program at Alfred State, has embarked on a global journey to launch his career in architecture, one that includes a rather unique focus – bamboo.

Nine students were recently installed in the Zeta V Chapter of the Sigma Lambda Chi (SLC) honor society at Alfred State.   

“The academy directly benefits the entire western New York region and provides police departments in Allegany and neighboring counties with high-quality law enforcement training opportunities and access to the corresponding certifications,” said Gregory Sammons, Alfred State vice president for Student Affairs.

Alfred State College (ASC) is celebrating the new look and amenities of the largest residence hall on campus with completion of phase one of its MacKenzie Makeover project. ASC will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 3 p.m. April 6 in the Commons area of the MacKenzie Complex.

Alfred State Director of Athletics Jason Doviak has announced the hiring of Scott Linn as the new executive head football coach for the Pioneers.

Alfred State College (ASC) nursing students in the Hope for Health Club will once again be providing some much-needed medical aid to residents of Haiti when they travel to the country this coming May.

Taking place July 29-31, the institute is hosted by the New York State STEM Education Collaborative, and provides a way for kindergarten-through-college-level educators to learn new techniques for engaging students of all ages in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) careers.

Van Valen capped an amazing career at ASC by becoming the 184-pound national title winner at the 2018 NCWA Championships in Allen, TX, on March 10. Teammate Ryan Mattison, a construction management major from Brockport, earned an impressive fifth-place finish nationally in the heavyweight bracket.

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo recently announced the grand opening of a new state-of-the-art Welding Lab, and renovations of the existing Machine Tool Lab and Auto Lab at Burgard High School in Buffalo. The $3.2 million Buffalo Billion initiative lead by Alfred State College provides the high-tech tools students need to train for careers in welding, automotive and other cutting-edge careers.

Skills tests ranged from criminal justice to TV/video production to public speaking. Alfred State faculty, staff, and students were heavily involved in the design, implementation, and judging of many of the contests. Many of the high school students were exposed to a college campus for the first time.

The menu will include Caribbean conch chowder, clams, oysters, mussels, calamari, crab stuffed mushrooms, smoked salmon, crab legs, shrimp, fried fresh cod, and more.

Utica General Peterbilt donated a PACCAR engine to Alfred State in the fall semester, and Joe Morrison, a fleet service manager, recently visited the School of Applied Technology campus in Wellsville to provide students with training on the engine.

Alfred State agricultural technology student Andrew Richards, of Silver Springs, recently represented the college as a 2018 Ambassador at the 185th New York State Agricultural Society Annual Meeting and Forum in Syracuse. 

As a result of valued partnerships with a number of companies and organizations, Alfred State College (ASC) is able to provide unique hands-on learning experiences and real-world equipment that can help turn students into job-ready workers once they graduate. 

Elaine Morsman, director of the Career Development Center at Alfred State, noted that the demand for employees in these fields is stronger than ever, and that ASC is well-suited to help meet that demand. 

The Educational Foundation of Alfred, Inc., annually provides $10,000 to Alfred State students through its work-grant program, allowing students who are ineligible for Federal College Work-Study funds to find employment on campus.
