New Era Coming for Alfred State Athletes

Groundbreaking CeremonyA new era of Alfred State College athletics will begin this fall as the Pioneers will have a brand new on-campus facility that will be the new home for football, soccer, lacrosse, and track & field. Work started on the complex a few weeks back but the grounds were officially broken in a ceremony held on Friday.

Five Pioneers named Chancellor Scholar Athletes

Five Alfred State College student-athletes have been awarded the SUNY Chancellor's Award for Scholar Athletes.  Nichole Tyler (Spencer Van Etten), Gallaway Longenecker (Manheim, PA), Heather Yaple (Holland Patent), Paul Farrell (Derby), and Zak Williamson (Rocky Point) all were honored.

Lacrosse players Jeremiah Bova (Salamanca) and Mitch Wensel (Corning East) have added another recognition to their freshmen campaigns.  Both Bova and Wensel were named to the All-Western New York Athletic Conference team.

Tyler and Waters named All-WNYAC

Nichole Tyler (Spencer Van Etten) and Becky Waters (Elmira Heights) have been selected to represent Alfred State on the All-Western New York Athletic Conference team.  Tyler was named a 1st team infielder while Waters was named to the 2nd team.

Alfred State softball players Nichole Tyler (Spencer Van Etten) and Becky Simpson (Campbell Savona) have been honored by Region III by being named to the Division III All-Region team.  Tyler was a 1st team selection while Simpson made the 2nd team.

Doorley named Coach of the Year

Gene Doorley, Alfred State College head volleyball coach, has been named the 2006 NJCAA Region III Division III coach of the year.  This honor was voted on by the coaches in Region III.

McMahon named Player of the Year

Freshmen outside hitter Brianne McMahon (Sweet Home) has been named the Region III Division III Player of the Year.  McMahon was joined on the All-Region 1st team by teammate Jessica Bonczar (Eden).  Yurika Toyodome (Tokyo, Japan) was a 2nd team selection.

Alfred State College freshmen outside hitter Brianne McMahon (Buffalo/Sweet Home) has earned NJCAA Division III honorable mention All-American honors.  McMahon and the Lady Pioneers were ranked as high as #5 nationally and finished as Region III Division III runner-ups after finishing the 2006 season with a 32-3 record.

Doorley named AVCA Northeast Coach of the Year

Alfred State College head volleyball coach Gene Doorley has been awarded another honor following the best season in school history since 1977.  After being named NJCAA Region III Division III Coach of the Year in late October, Doorley has been named the Northeast Coach of the Year by the American Volleyball Coaches Association.

The Alfred State College women's soccer team had six players named to All-Western New York Athletic Conference.  Jody Ninos (Alfred-Almond) and Marie Alessi (Greece Athena) were 1st team selections while Ashleigh Houghtaling (N. Potter, PA), Lyndsay Shultz (Whitesville), Taylor Reynolds (Alfred-Almond), and Tiffany McLaughlin (Wellsville) were named 2nd team.

Nichole Tyler (Spencer Van Etten), Tiffany McLaughlin (Wellsville), and Jaslynn Lee (Rush Henrietta) have been named to the Region III Division II All-Region team. Tyler and McLaughlin were 1st team selections while Lee was a 3rd team honoree.

Alfred State College sophomore Nichole Tyler (Spencer Van Etten) has been named 3rd team NJCAA Division II All-American.  Tyler becomes the first player under head coach Gina Boyd to be named a NJCAA All-American.

Wrestlers rack up awards

The Alfred State College wrestling team has earned numerous awards following a successful season that saw the team finish 27th overall (8th in the Division III standings) at the NJCAA National Championships last weekend.

Luckett Heading to Clarion

Jamie Luckett (St. Charles, MO) has decided he will continue his academic and wrestling career at Clarion University.  Luckett earned NJCAA All-American honors in consecutive seasons and finished his career on the mats with a 47-4 overall record. 

Men finish 8th, Women 9th at Swim Nationals

The Alfred State College men's swim team finished 8th in the nation while the women finished 9th at the four day national championships in Buffalo.  The men's team scored 143 points while the women scored 66.

Six Pios named All-WNYAC

Six members of the Alfred State College men's soccer team have been named to the All-Western New York Athletic Conference team.  Cole Finnemore (Genesee Valley), Andrew Beardsley (Letchworth), and Matt Paryz (Lancaster) were 1st team selections while Colin Coon (Trumansburg), Dom Bisone (Tonawanda), and Chris Coogan (Rome Free) were named to the 2nd team.

Seven members of the Alfred State College football team have been named to the All-Northeast Football Conference team.  Nabil Ra'Qib El-Amin (Rochester/Wilson) and Ryan Turner (Canisteo Greenwood) each were named to the 1st team.  CJ Lee (Lockport) and Jamie Luckett (St. Charles, MO) were named 2nd team while Rob Fife (North Canaan, CT), Mike Stromsness (Bath), and Kyle Martin (New Paltz) were named honorable mention.

Alfred State College running back Nabil Ra'Qib El-Amin (Rochester/Wilson) has been honored by the NJCAA by being named honorable mention All-American.  El-Amin is the 6th Pioneer in football history to be named All-American.

Former Pioneer to play in Magnolia Bowl

Former Alfred State College cornerback Codera Jackson (Rochester/East) will finish off his collegiate playing career in the 2nd annual Magnolia Bowl in Jackson, MS this Saturday.  Jackson recently finished his career at Youngstown State as he helped the Penguins to the NCAA Division IAA semifinals and a 11-3 record.

199 athletes representing 28 different NJCAA Division III cross country programs competed in the mud at Alfred State at the 2006 National Championships.  Gloucester (NJ) County College won their first ever National title on the women's side while SUNY Delhi won the men's title for the third straight year.

The Alfred State Cross Country program had a strong showing.  The women's team finished 6th with 125 points while the men finished 8th with 208 points.

Sophomore guard Maceo Haynesworth (Hartsville, SC) and freshmen forward Keron Wray (Brooklyn/Grady) have been named to the Region III Division II All-Region team.  Both players were named to the 3rd team.

The Alfred State College athletic department recently handed out their end-of-year awards at a ceremony held at college's Lake Lodge. 

Track teams win Regional Titles

The Alfred State College men's and women's outdoor track and field teams captured Region III Championships on Saturday at SUNY Delhi.  The men were 17 points better than 2nd place SUNY Delhi with 237 points while the women racked up 195 points to better Herkimer CCC's 136 points.

Fourteen members of the Alfred State College outdoor track and field team have earned All-Region honors based on their winning performances at last weekend's Region III Championships.

Sanchez named Player of Year

Alfred State College sophomore shortstop Jose Sanchez (Tachira, Venezuela) was named the Region III Division II Player of the Year.  Sanchez is the 6th Pioneer to be named the Player of the Year since baseball returned to ASC in 1994.

Sanchez along with Matt Stewart (Hornell), Jason Michaels (Geneva), and Gary Pitcheralle (Mechanicville) were 1st team All-Region selections while Jeff Benchich (Millbrook), Jeff Miller (N. Tonawanda), Kyle Hall (Oakfield Alabama), Ed Southworth (Cortland), and Kevin Underhill (Somers) made the 2nd team.

Banner Year for Track & Field

The Alfred State College track and field program had a banner year culminating at the NJCAA Division III Outdoor National Championships.  At the National Championships the women's team brought home the National Title for the first time in school history while the men finished as the National runner-ups.
