“The professors are fun. They really try to make it the best experience for us and make sure that they get the knowledge to us. They make sure we understand and are super willing to help whenever we need extra help with anything.”

Conor Compton wanted to study heavy equipment operations and continue to dive when he went to college. He was able to find both at Alfred State.

“I chose Alfred State because of the great opportunities we have here to operate all this equipment. The coolest part is I get to participate in the diving team which is something not a lot of programs will allow you to do. This was a unique program because I get the college experience, the college degree, and I also get to dive on the team.”

Conor enjoys the balance between classroom and hands-on education he receives. “The first hours of our day are usually in the classroom and that's where we advance past just the operating. We learn about blueprints, how to set up a work zone, and all that kind of really important information that kind of allows to see the construction management side of things rather than just operating side.”

Conor’s excitement grows when his education heads outside. “I love being outside. That is probably my favorite part of this program. I really love the hands-on work. That was really what I was looking for when I came here.”
Conor and his classmates operate skid steers, bulldozers, excavators, backhoes, wheel loaders and will progress to larger equipment as their education continues. He enjoys and appreciates the lessons taught by his professors.

After class Conor shifts gears and gets ready for practice. His performances on the diving board have established new school records and qualified him to compete at the NCAA Division III National Championships.

Conor is excited about his continued growth in his sport, but he cherishes the friendships he has made with his teammates. “It is a great group of guys and girls. We have a good bond, especially on the men's team. We are always doing stuff together; we are always hanging out.”

As an only child, Conor has enjoyed living on campus. “It is awesome to always have people around to hang out with, talk to, and do stuff.”

Conor has found everything he was looking for at Alfred State and he is excited to pursue his dream job. “I'm really looking forward to owning my own company someday and owning some of my own equipment.”
