“The professors are awesome. They are all guys that have experience, and they are all masters at what they do. It is nice to be able to ask questions to somebody who wants to help, and they know the answers.”

Shane Strazdins (Rochester, NY) was introduced to careers in the electrical industry from a summer job which led him to the electrical construction and maintenance electrician program at Alfred State. He entered college with no experience but with the help of his professors and friends in the program, he is excited where his degree will take him.

“I worked over the summer doing in-ground pool and through that I was introduced to guys that did more electrical work and it sounded like a good opportunity for me. I was not looking at traditional college schooling so getting into a trade was a good option.”

Shane enjoys the class schedule for his program. “We go to lecture for an hour or two and then head right to lab. The lecture deals with theory and we will go over what we are going to do that day in lab. It is very helpful that we can talk through things and ask questions before we jump into it.”

In his studies, Shane has enjoyed learning about solar panels and wind turbines but has found his professors to be key to his educational experience. “The professors are awesome. They are all guys that have experience, and they are all masters at what they do. It is nice to be able to ask questions to somebody who wants to help, and they know the answers.”

The friends Shane has made in his curriculum and while living on the Alfred campus have been a plus. “I have been fortunate to make a bunch of friends. I live in a suite with my best friends. We have a fun time watching football, laying back and hanging out, and helping each other with homework.”

Shane spent last summer working for Radec Electric and that experience has him excited about his career. “I was fortunate to do a lot of commercial electric work. It was a super experience to work under a master electrician who was willing to help me with whatever questions I had.”
