“I am involved in a lot, and it feels good to help. In the spaces I have been, we have been able to create a community or family. It is important to give back to people who give to you. I have gained a lot from my experiences at Alfred State.”

Ashley Clemente (Manhattan, NY/Life Science High School) fell in love with the Alfred State community and looks forward to growing her own community.

Ashley was introduced to Alfred State at a college fair and her interactions with the admissions counselor led her to visiting campus. “When I came to campus with my aunt the summer before my senior year, I got that feeling that this was the right place for me. Alfred State was affordable and accessible.”

Initially she was drawn to veterinary technology with the desire to open her own clinic, but she changed her mind and shifted towards agriculture. “Working in the garden is really relaxing. I felt I could do well and be on track to own my business. A business that can help people. I want to have a vineyard and winery in New York, and I would really like to sell my products to the city. I would also like a space for a small farm.”

Ashley has enjoyed the teaching style of the classes she has taken. “Classes have been consistently hands- on, whether the classes are on the farm, in the greenhouse, or in the lab. I have had so much hands-on experience.”

“The professors are really caring, and they push me. I have not had a professor that did not believe I could do my absolute best. I feel like I have always had the support from my professors.”

Becoming part of the Alfred State community has increased her overall experience. Ashley has worked as a resident assistant, an EOP mentor, an orientation leader, worked on the campus activities board, and most recently has been part of the opening and operation of the Community Needs Hub.
