Alfred State College’s culinary arts students and faculty along with the western equestrian team participated in the Cuba Garlic Festival last weekend.
Associate Professor and Culinary Arts department chair Debra Burch coordinated activities for the whole family. The highlight of the weekend was when two teams of culinary students battled in a “Chopped” style competition. Each team of three made three courses, a soup, an entrée, and a dessert. The contest was judged, and the winning team won prizes from Cutco.
Culinary Arts Professors Kevin Scott and Keith Glover presented a cooking demonstration while Professor Rebecca Milliner did a dessert demonstration. Cookie decorating was also available for children each day.
Members of the ASC Western Equestrian team were present for both days of the event and put on ranch demonstrations, demonstrated their skills, and did a tribute to veterans in attendance. Coach Rose Stayer-Ruffner and her team also interacted with guests and offered horse rides.
Being part of the Garlic Festival was just one of the many ways both the Culinary Arts department and the Western Equestrian team give back to the surrounding community.
The Cuba Garlic Festival, located at Empire City Farms, featured over 140 vendors, garlic themed foods, live music, cooking demos, and barn tours.
