“In the shop we take what we learn in the classroom and put it all together. We get customer cars, diagnose them, figure out what is wrong, and return to the customers. Lots of live experience.”

Finding a college that he could learn more about cars and continue his wrestling career led Benjamin Rivera to Alfred State College.

“I have grown up working on cars with my father. I really like working on cars. Alfred State had wrestling and automotive; it was a good fit for me.”

Benjamin enjoys the learning experiences he has. “A lot of the program is hands-on. Less book work and more hands-on work. I enjoy taking things apart and putting them back together. Looking at them from the inside out. It is a lot of fun for me.”

Benjamin is active outside the classroom and the wrestling mat. He is a student ambassador, a resident assistant, and a member of the student athlete advisory committee.

He has learned to be prepared and has learned time management. “We want to do things as efficiently as possible. When you get a customer car you need to work through it and get it back to the customer in a timely fashion.”
