Stephen Richard, assistant professor, building trades, at Alfred State College, has authored a workbook:  Workbook to Accompany Masonry Skills, 6th ed., published by Thompson Delmar Learning to be used in high schools, colleges, and training centers throughout the United States.

This book serves as a competency-based workbook companion to the text Masonry Skills, 6th ed., written by Richard Kreh.

"The craft of masonry relies on good hand skills.  My intention was to write a workbook that would guide students in building practice projects from very basic [ones] such as a brick corner to advanced projects such as a Rumford fireplace.  Each of the 49 competency-based projects contains a task, performance objective, related learning activities, procedure, and instructor's evaluation and checklist," notes Richard.

"I enjoyed collaborating with textbook author and masonry expert Richard Kreh who has taught many masonry students throughout his career. The masonry industry needs a skilled work force which has the ability to design and build visually pleasing masonry structures to replace our retiring masons.  Students can develop their hand skills and knowledge by building the brick veneer projects that teach students historic bond patterns, quoin corners, and corbel work.  The masonry industry can quickly and easily add pleasing designs to brick veneer projects by using these techniques," he adds.

Richard, who has been an Alfred State College faculty member since 2004, holds a bachelor of science degree in industrial arts education from Cheyney University; he has also attended several professional training seminars, including Safety, Universal Building Code, Pay for Performance, Waterproofing, Masonry Reinforcing Cavity Wall Construction, Rough Terrain Forklift Operation and Instructor Course, Certification/Installation Training for Dry-Vit EIFS System, and NCCER Instructor Certification.

In addition to his Alfred State College responsibilities, Richard serves as president and sole stockholder of Miller and Richard Masonry Contractors, Inc. (1979-present).  Additionally, prior to joining the ASC faculty, Richard was the sole proprietor of Steven B. Richard Contractor (services); a substitute teacher at Northern Potter (PA) High School; a construction worker for Ed Hager Construction; and a masonry laborer at John Bubel Masonry, Inc.

Richard holds the following certifications:  Rough Terrain Forklift Operation, NCCER Instructor Certification, Dry-Vit EIFS System Certification, Hilti Powder Actuated Tools, University Masonry Professors Conference.

He is member of the following organizations:  First Citizens National Bank - local board member; Genesee Headwaters Watershed Association - president; Yorks Corners Mennonite Church - past youth group leader, elder; Mennonite Mutual Aid Advocate, and Mennonite Disaster Service.
