Orvis Winner - Joseph Greenthal

Some 900 two- and four-year graduates, their families, professors, and friends were on hand Sunday, May 13, as Alfred State College honored its 96th graduating class. Dr. John B. Clark, interim college president, presided over the ceremony. One of the highlights of the ceremony is the presentation of the Paul B. Orvis Award for Excellence, presented to the outstanding two-year graduates in each of the college's schools of study, as well as to a baccalaureate graduate.

The award, which honors Paul B. Orvis, a former president of Alfred State and State University of New York dean for two-year colleges, is a glass bowl. Recipients must meet four criteria: service, leadership, character, and scholarship. Faculty, staff, and fellow students appraise the first three. Scholarship is determined by an analysis of the student's academic standing in comparison to other students in the academic area. Dr. Ronald R. Rosati, provost and vice president for academic affairs, presented the Award.

Pictured here, Joseph T. Greenthal, of Hornell, business administration (transfer) major, School of Management and Engineering Technology, associate degree level recipient, is congratulated by Rosati. While a student at ASC, Greenthal served as marketing officer for Alfred State Political Alignment Club; member of Phi Theta Kappa honor society; was named to the Dean's List four consecutive semesters; earned the Frank and Mary Beaton Scholarship, the Horatio Alger Military scholarship, the Ameriprise Retention scholarship, and the Professor Brian Gillespie Scholarship. He was named Outstanding Senior Award recipient for the business administration-transfer curriculum during the college's recent Honors Convocation. The son of Fred Greenthal and Lisa Dye, Joseph plans to return to ASC for his baccalaureate degree in financial planning.
