Orvis Award, Waterman

Some 900 two- and four-year graduates, their families, professors, and friends were on hand Sunday, May 13, as Alfred State College honored its 96th graduating class. Dr. John B. Clark, interim college president, presided over the ceremony. One of the highlights of the ceremony is the presentation of the Paul B. Orvis Award for Excellence, presented to the outstanding two-year graduates in each of the college's schools of study, as well as to a baccalaureate graduate.

The award, which honors Paul B. Orvis, a former president of Alfred State and State University of New York dean for two-year colleges, is a glass bowl. Recipients must meet four criteria: service, leadership, character, and scholarship. Faculty, staff, and fellow students appraise the first three. Scholarship is determined by an analysis of the student's academic standing in comparison to other students in the academic area. Dr. Ronald R. Paula E. Waterman, of Collins, a veterinary technology major, School of Arts and Sciences recipient, is congratulated by Rosati. While at ASC, Waterman was a member of the NYS Association of Veterinary Technicians; she was awarded the Education Foundation Academic Distinction Award and the Professor Brian Gillespie Scholarship; she was named to the Dean's List all four semesters. She has garnered a variety of honors, including Phi Theta Kappa honor society, Who's Who among American Junior Colleges, and Collegiate All-American Scholar Award. Waterman also served as a peer tutor as well as a supplemental instructor, Phonathon room coordinator, and work study student in the Agriculture and Horticulture Department. This Springville Griffith Institute graduate is the daughter of Paul and Edythe Waterman of Collins.
