Lawrence ("Ed") Burns, State University of New York (SUNY) distinguished teaching professor, Mathematics and Physics Department, Alfred State College, was honored recently for his 40 years of service at the college. A member of the faculty since 1968, Burns holds a master of science degree in engineering from SUNY Buffalo, a bachelor of science degree in engineering science from Purdue University (IN), and an associate of applied science degree in engineering science from Alfred State College, class of 1965.
Burns has participated in the annual Eisenhower Grant director seminars summarizing current research findings for "best practices" in teaching science and math. Over the past 25 years, he has participated in numerous NSF-sponsored conferences on mathematics and science education. In 1973, he and one other NSF consortium member were recognized for the productivity of their grant projects and awarded an "all expenses paid" trip to the international conference on APL applications in Copenhagen, Denmark.
Burns was awarded the 1997-98 SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching.
The Bath native is a 1963 graduate of Hammondsport High School. He is married to the former Kathleen Long. The couple resides in Alfred; they are the parents of six grown children.
As a token of the college's appreciation of his service, Burns was given a certificate and a college lamp.
This year's luncheon theme was Eat Fresh, Buy Local, Think Green, which hosted a variety of local vendors promoting their products and increasing awareness of the benefits of buying locally.
