Elizabeth Reed (Cayuta, NY), a current member of the U.S. Army and a first-generation college student, has always dreamed of building a career caring for animals. Alfred State's Veterinary Technology program was a great fit because of its outstanding reputation and the opportunity to use her military education benefits at a SUNY institution.
"I've always had a passion for animals, and this program has given me the opportunity to turn that passion into a career."
The Vet Tech program combines rigorous classroom instruction with extensive hands-on learning. Elizabeth and her classmates gain experience performing blood draws, assisting with surgical procedures, working with shelter animals, and caring for large animals on the College farm.
"My favorite part of the program is working directly with the animals. Knowing that the tests and treatments we perform improve their quality of life makes the work incredibly rewarding."
Elizabeth credits Alfred State's faculty, all licensed veterinarians and veterinary technicians, for preparing students with real-world knowledge.
"The professors have done the jobs we're preparing for. They're always willing to share their experiences and help us become the best veterinary technicians we can be."
The veteran community has provided a strong support system making the transition from military service to college life seamless.

Elizabeth has expanded her educational goals by pursuing a second degree in Biology. Looking ahead, she plans to continue serving others through a career dedicated to improving animal health and welfare.
