ASC looks to build state-of-the-art ‘Doc Bruce Construction Materials Laboratory’
For more than two decades, Alfred State College (ASC) Professor William Bruce, DE, PE, was a beloved mentor and gained the respect of faculty, industry leaders, and students alike for his excellence in education.
“Doc” Bruce, as his students knew him, was the initial adviser for the Alfred State College Associated General Contractors (AGC) student chapter. He worked tirelessly with industry leaders, including the New York State Asphalt Pavement Association (NYSAPA), to connect students with industry through site visits and internships. He was also the first lead examiner for the statewide New York Construction Materials Association hot mix asphalt QC/QA certification program. His efforts over the years made an impressive impact in the construction field through the many Alfred State graduates who are now industry leaders.
Now, two of Dr. Bruce’s students who graduated from Alfred State in 1977 and are now industry leaders – Jimmy Smith, president of Advance Testing Company, and Gary Hill, president of Union Concrete Construction Corporation – are co-chairing a campaign to build The Doc Bruce Construction Materials Laboratory.
This lab would honor Doc Bruce’s memory and contributions, and support students in the Civil Engineering Technology Department. The state-of-the art facility would provide outstanding experiences in laboratory and field testing of various construction materials, focusing on soils, concrete, and asphalt.

One Day. One Goal. One Alfred.
Thanks to your support, we were able to raise over $218,000 during our fifth annual Day of Giving! Your generosity benefits Alfred State and our students through scholarships, new programs, updated technology, athletic programs, and more. This day also saw a number of donors providing support for the Alfred State SOS Fund, which has made a major impact on the lives of more than 200 current students during these uncertain and challenging times.
The Alfred State Family stepped up in a big way once again for our annual Day of Giving, and we are very proud of and thankful for the generosity shown by each of our donors. Thank you for making a difference!

Alfred State awards honorary degree to Alan Hunt
Alfred State awarded alumnus and Major Gifts Campaign donor Alan Hunt with an honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters during the college’s virtual commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 8.
Today, Hunt is the executive vice president of construction at Armada Hoffler, a vertically integrated, self-managed real estate investment trust that has four decades of experience developing, building, acquiring, and managing high-quality office, retail, and multifamily properties located primarily in the Mid-Atlantic and Southeastern United States. He graduated from Alfred State in 1979 with a degree in computer information systems.
Hunt credits the skills he gained at Alfred State with helping him to manage projects, whether it’s scheduling one activity at a time in the correct sequence or being able to visualize the finished project in his mind before he even begins working on it. Throughout his distinguished career at Armada Hoffler, where he has worked since 1991, Hunt has been involved in some amazing projects from New Jersey to Georgia, including many high-profile jobs such as Harbor East, an upscale, multiple city block development on the waterfront in Baltimore; the Brasstown Valley Resort in the North Georgia mountains; and the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Washington, DC.
In addition to building structures, Hunt is helping to build futures, as he and his wife, Mary Ellen, a fellow ASC alum, started an endowment fund at Alfred State to help building trades, automotive trades, and heavy equipment students at the Wellsville campus further their education.
Alfred State dedicates new Wilder and Linneball Hall of Excellence
Celebrating a brand-new facility that honors the achievements and contributions of Alfred State alumni and friends, the college recently dedicated The Wilder and Linneball Hall of Excellence during a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
Located in the Student Leadership Center on the Alfred campus, this facility was made possible thanks to a generous contribution to Alfred State College’s (ASC) Major Gifts Campaign through the law firm founded in 2000 by J. Joseph Wilder and his wife, Laura Linneball. Wilder also serves as the college’s major gifts officer.
During the ribbon-cutting ceremony, Alfred State President Dr. Skip Sullivan said, “Jay and Laura, we thank you so much for your dedication and commitment to the college. This Hall of Excellence will be a place to highlight the success of our many alumni and friends and inspire our future Alfred State alumni leaders.”
Linneball then provided a few remarks, saying. “I am humbled by this dedication, and Jay and I were happy to donate to Alfred. We’ve seen how Alfred really does change lives.”
Wilder spoke next, noting that the idea for the Hall of Excellence was inspired by the Shay Family Athletic Hall of Fame in the Orvis Activities Center, which opened last July thanks to the generosity of the late Jon Shay. Located next to the Admissions Office and the campus store, The Wilder and Linneball Hall of Excellence features a touch screen monitor that allows students, returning alumni, and visitors to learn more about the inductees and become inspired by their success. The Hall of Excellence can also be viewed on the college website.
“The purpose of the Hall of Excellence is to recognize alumni and friends of the college who have demonstrated outstanding professional or personal achievements, service to community, or other extraordinary accomplishments,” Wilder said. “We have tens of thousands of alumni and we’ve just started scratching the surface in terms of honoring those who are inspiringly successful. Right now, we have less than 50 people in the Hall of Excellence, but we’re going to be adding a lot more.”
Linneball is a graduate of SUNY Buffalo and the Indiana University School of Law. During her career, she has appeared as counsel in complex civil, utility company, labor, and health care litigation.
Wilder is a graduate of Alfred State College, class of 1977, majoring in industrial technology and broadcasting. He continued his education at Purdue University, and then SUNY Buffalo School of Law. He has been a lawyer since 1984, using his industrial and technology education to represent businesses in complex litigations across the United States. Throughout the years, Alfred State College has held a special place in Wilder’s heart, which is why he and his wife helped create the Hall of Excellence and why he took on a leadership role in ASC’s Major Gifts Campaign.
