Dr. John Anderson was welcomed as officer-in-charge on May 10, 2021 as Alfred State continues to search for a permanent president to replace the recently retired Dr. Skip Sullivan.

Dr. Anderson is no stranger to Alfred State, having served as a past president from 2008 to 2013. As such, he has a wealth of knowledge and is best qualified to transition the college in preparation for new leadership. He also served as president of Millersville University in Millersville, PA from 2013 until his retirement in 2018.

An experienced leader, Dr. Anderson’s career in education began at Alfred State College where he served in a number of leadership capacities and faculty positions for over 25 years. During his more than 11 years as a professor of chemistry and physics at Alfred State (which began in 1981), he also served as chair of the Faculty Senate at Alfred and was convener of statewide SUNY Local Governance Leaders. Both experiences influenced him as president to elevate Faculty Senate representation to the highest level possible.

In between Dr. Anderson’s years as an Alfred State professor and his presidency, he held several senior-level administrative positions within the college, including the roles of interim vice president of Student Services, dean of Student Development, vice president of Institutional Advancement, and provost and vice president for Academic Affairs.

As president, enrollment at Alfred State grew by 20 percent and the college embarked on a new Strategic Plan that included the reallocation of more than $1 million to the new strategic initiatives; new programs were added, including baccalaureate programs in sport management, forensic science technology, human services management, and nursing. Additionally, under Dr. Anderson’s leadership, projects totaling $75 million included the complete renovation of the Physical and Health Sciences Building, the construction of a $33.5 million Student Leadership Center, renovation of the College Farm, and the opening of the Center for Organic and Sustainable Agriculture.

Anderson is also a product of the SUNY family, holding a Doctorate in Education from Cornell University, a Master of Arts in physics from SUNY Geneseo, a Bachelor of Science in physics from SUNY Brockport, as well as an Associate of Science from Westchester Community College.
