Alfred State College (ASC) President Dr. Steven Mauro has hit the ground running since being named the 13th president of the college in late January. Learning what makes ASC great and meeting with the people that make it great (students, faculty, staff, alumni, employers, and community members) has been key during the first few months of his time at the college.

The core of what we have now is incredible. It is high quality. It is what attracted me here. I wanted to be at a place that was doing great things. I wanted to bring my time and talent to help shape that.

“It is imperative that every person who wishes to seek out higher education can do so in a way that is equitable and encouraged. This dedication to students and their education is precisely what I observed at Alfred State. As a SUNY alumnus myself, who believes in the promise of higher education, I look forward to continuing and advancing that momentum and working with Alfred State’s faculty, staff, and students.”

Dr. Mauro most recently served as vice president for Strategy and Campus Operations at Gannon University. Prior to that, he served as dean of Health Professions and Sciences, interim provost, and vice president for Academic Administration. His innovative and entrepreneurial leadership approach in these roles contributed to establishing additional campuses, launching independent online programming, improving retention, participating in fundraising, generating alternate revenue (including establishing a COVID-19 surveillance lab), engaging community and corporate partners, and overseeing a multi-million-dollar construction portfolio. Prior to joining Gannon, Dr. Mauro was a faculty member at Mercyhurst University.

Born and raised in Niagara Falls, upon graduating valedictorian of his high school class, he received his education at the State University of New York at Buffalo, graduating magna cum laude and earning a BS and PhD in biology. Dr. Mauro was also awarded a National Institutes of Health Ruth Kirchstein Postdoctoral Fellowship to further his education at Cornell University.

“We, within higher education, can inspire greatness! We can make things that seem impossible to people, in the here and now, possible. With students here at Alfred State – they have great things in life that are waiting for them. We have an opportunity to shape that and let them know that they can go on and live great lives and get phenomenal jobs.”

Mauro advises students to, “work hard, be patient, be good to people, and take opportunities when they come your way.”

Whether it is at a game at Pioneer Stadium, in one of the hundreds of academic labs on campus, on the stage of the Cappadonia Auditorium, or just in line waiting for a coffee, students, faculty, and staff will be accustomed to seeing Mauro.

“I really enjoy supporting the students and those that are shaping their lives every day. I want to be where the action is. I will be attending their events to let them know I am enthusiastic about what they are doing.”

Mauro also looks forward to his interactions to ASC alumni. “I cannot wait to hear the stories. They have these rich and enriching lives. I want to hear how Alfred State has helped shape them as human beings.”

“I get to hear all the great things that used to happen and then I get to tell them here is what we have going on now and this is how we are carrying on your legacy – living on the shoulder of giants.”

Mauro and his wife Melissa are the proud parents of two sons, Owen, and Quinn.
