“The students did an excellent job growing their skills with their sketching. They had the opportunity to sketch amazing places in Sorrento and in a variety of places along their travels throughout Europe. I am proud of them and congratulate our three honorees.”

The Department of Architecture and Design at Alfred State recently announced the winners of the Bob Pahl Sketching Award. Selena Fullone (Webster, NY) was honored with first prize, Josselyn Mejia (Newburgh, NY), was awarded second, and Trevor Allen (Livonia, NY) earned third.
The award, which has been given annually since 2012, recognizes three students who kept the top sketch journals while studying abroad in Sorrento, Italy, as part of their Urban Sketching & Journaling course. The Architecture professors at Alfred State review and judge the contest.
Bob Pahl, a Boston-area architect, graduated from Alfred State in 1981 with a degree in architectural engineering technology. Pahl donates monetary prizes to the honorees. As a first-year student, Pahl was inspired by the introduction to architecture course taught by the late Jeffrey Johnston who founded the Sorrento Study Abroad program.
Professor William Dean, AIA, travels with the Alfred State students and teaches the Urban Sketching & Journaling course. “The Bob Pahl Award is a great incentive for the students in Sorrento to carefully document their travel experiences and observations. They work through a series of assignments that ask them to sketch and note their surroundings.”

Now in its 16th year, Dean directs Studio Sorrento at the Sant’Anna Institute. The program is open to Alfred State architecture students in their third year of study and provides participants a unique opportunity for a spring semester experience that also includes courses in Italian and Archeology in addition to Studio Sorrento.
“We are grateful to Bob for his continued support of the art of sketching and the architecture program.”
