“Remember that your college journey is an investment not just in an independent future, but in building a confidence that will carry you through life’s challenges. You made a good choice in Alfred State. We are proud to have some of the very best employment and continuing education rates in all of SUNY.”
Dr. Greg Sammons

Alfred State joined colleges across the country to celebrate first-generation students during the First-Generation College Celebration on Nov. 8. Students were joined by faculty and staff at a celebration held in the MacKenzie Commons.

Sammons enrolled in a criminal justice program at a community college and has earned multiple degrees culminating in his doctorate in organizational leadership from Northeastern University.

Students enjoyed refreshments, including a cake made and designed by Annabelle Koszelak, music, and photo booths during the celebration. Earlier in the day there were also celebrations held during lunch on both the Alfred and Wellsville campuses.
“This is such a special event, and we are excited to celebrate our students,” commented Calsey Bump, Assistant Director of First Year Engagement. “Alfred State has so many first-generation students. We love that they are learning and living in our community.”
Sammons shared plans on new, increased programming and opportunities for first-generation students and wrapped up his remarks by giving advice. “Be very proud of your membership in the first-generation community. Be resourceful, ready to work hard, and ask questions. Recognize your degree will open doors, but you must be brave and walk through them. Remember you are paving a path for someone coming after you. Stay curious and keep pushing forward."
