Tyler Petery (Schwenksville, PA) found the perfect combination at Alfred State. He was able to pursue a career in cyber security and continue to play baseball.

Tyler enjoys the hands-on opportunities he has had in the program. “There were a lot of technical skills that I had no idea about coming into here that I have learned through my classes and my professors. It is a great way to learn. We get a basic understanding of concepts in lecture and then get to delve right into the hands-on approach to the material.”
Hands-on experience has helped Tyler find his passion. “I would like to be a cyber security analyst. I want to monitor and analyze threats that companies face. Not only am I monitoring but I am responding to those threats.”
Projects and the professors have added to his experiences. “In my forensics analysis class every project was a real-world scenario. If you have any questions or do not fully understand a topic you can go and ask your professor and they always are willing to sit down and simplify it so that is easier to digest.”
For his internship, Tyler has worked in the Technology Service Department as part of the incident response team. “I have been able to deepen my understanding of information technology, cyber security, and networking as well as gain practical experiences in all three areas. This experience has helped put me ahead of my competition.
Tyler encourages anyone interested in cyber security to look at Alfred State. “You are going to get a strong education and a lot of hands-on experience. I know for me that is how I like to learn.”
Playing on the baseball team has been rewarding. “This school places a large emphasis on student coming first but being on the baseball team has easily been my favorite time here at Alfred. It is just a great experience full of memories that I will carry with me for a long time.”
