Statement from ASC President Steven Mauro to the Campus Community

May 15, 2022:

Dear Campus Community,

As students and parents were leaving our joyous commencement ceremony this weekend and headed home, they received word of a horrific attack in Buffalo. I grew up nearby in Niagara Falls and I believe Buffalo has earned its reputation over the years as the “city of good neighbors.” That peaceful coexistence was shattered apparently by someone who traveled hours to terrorize an inner-city neighborhood.

As SUNY Interim Chancellor Deborah Stanley stated, ”We cannot allow intentional acts of horrific violence to destroy our peace and divide us against each other. The entire SUNY family stands in solidarity with the City of Buffalo and with the victims of this despicable tragedy.”

This incident also impacts Alfred State directly as the site for this tragedy at Tops Supermarket is in the same neighborhood as our campus at Northland Workforce Training Center. We know the Pioneer family is in mourning. The emotional wounds are deep, and we are here for support. Do not hesitate to reach out for assistance through ASC Health and Wellness Services or the multi-campus support available from SUNY.

Alfred State is committed to ensure safety and security at every campus and to teach the values of understanding and appreciation among all people. At Northland, Wellsville, and Alfred we are proud to promote justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion. Whether it be Western New York or New York City, we are melting pots and attract students from across the state, nationally, and internationally. To be a Pioneer is to know that together we are stronger.
