New Alfred State College (ASC) President Dr. Steven Mauro looks forward to interacting with current and past Pioneers and all those who have helped shape their experience.

When reflecting on his own path in higher education, Mauro knows that anything is possible. He grew up in a working class family in Niagara Falls and he was one of the first people in his family to attend college.

“It was really important to me that I was able to make the transition (to college). I found that opportunities were there if I was willing to work for it. We within higher education can inspire greatness! We can make things that seem impossible to people, in the here and now, possible. With students here at Alfred State – I think they have great things in life that are waiting for them. We have an opportunity to shape that and let them know that they can go on and live great lives and get phenomenal jobs.”

Mauro advises current students to, “work hard, be patient, be good to people, and take opportunities when they come

your way.”

Students, faculty, and staff will be accustomed to seeing Mauro at their events. Whether it is at a game at Pioneer Stadium, in one of the hundreds of academic labs on campus, on the stage of the Cappadonia Auditorium, or just in line waiting for a coffee.

“I really enjoy supporting the students and those that are shaping their lives every day. I want to be where the action is at. I will be attending their events to let them know I am enthusiastic about what they are doing.”

Mauro also looks forward to his interactions to ASC alumni. “I can’t wait to hear the stories. They have these rich and enriching lives. I want to hear how Alfred State has helped shape them as human beings.”

“I get to hear all the great things that used to happen and then I get to tell them here is what we have going on now and this is how we are carrying on your legacy – living on the shoulder of giants.”

“The core of what we have now is incredible. It is high quality and it is what attracted me to a place like Alfred State.”
