Walter Sass, RPLS, can relate to the theme of Alfred State’s Major Gifts Campaign, “Be a Life Changer,” because the college made a very big impact on his own life.

Today, Sass is a principal owner of Weisser Engineering & Surveying in Houston, TX, with years of success in his field. A 1978 surveying technology graduate, he credits Alfred State College with helping him get to where he is today.

“I have always looked at Alfred as being the major foundation for my education and my confidence to succeed in the business world,” he said.

Knowing what a difference Alfred State can make in students’ lives, Sass decided to donate to the school’s Major Gifts Campaign, which launched in September to raise $8 million for athletics, new programs, scholarships, technology, and the greatest needs of the college. The campaign has currently raised over $5.75 million in donations and pledges thanks to the generosity of donors such as Walter Sass.

After graduating in 1978, Sass immediately went to Texas to work, beginning his employment with a civil engineering firm. A couple of years later, he went to work for Weisser Engineering Company, Inc., which was established by “one of Houston’s premier engineers and surveyors, Frederick C. Weisser, PE, RPLS, with the mission to provide exceptional engineering and surveying services in the Gulf Coast area,” according to the company’s website.

Now known as Weisser Engineering & Surveying (WES), the company has been under the direction of Walter Sass and Barry Hufford, both former employees or Mr. Weisser, since 1987. Weisser’s capabilities include general civil engineering, land development, construction management, and all areas of land surveying, mapping, digital scanning, and global positioning systems (GPS).
