The New York State Court Reporters Association has recently awarded Alfred State student Dana Schaaf with a $500 Horizon Scholarship.

Schaaf, a court reporting and captioning major from Astoria, was one of just six students to have received the scholarship, which helps defray the costs associated with tuition, books, and/or supplies. To be eligible for the scholarship, students must have met a number of requirements, including, among others:

  • Being enrolled in a licensed New York State court reporting school.
  • Qualification on a school-administered test of 150 words per minute with at least 95 percent accuracy.
  • Achieving a grade point average of at least “B.”

The Horizon Scholarship Fund is organized for the purpose of sponsoring educational and scientific projects pertaining to the art of manual or mechanical verbatim reporting by the use of shorthand symbols, with particular emphasis on training and education, and study in the advancement of the art of shorthand reporting.
