Alfred State applauds Orvis Award winners and dean’s list students

Alfred State College Provost Dr. Kristin Poppo has announced the dean’s list of academically impressive students for spring 2018.

To be listed, students must have completed at least 12 credit hours for the semester and earned a 3.5 grade point average (GPA) out of a possible 4.0. For the most recent semester, the dean’s list includes 753 students. In addition, 191 of these students achieved a perfect 4.0 GPA.

“Alfred State has many academically talented students, and we congratulate all of those who have earned dean’s list honors for the spring 2018 semester,” Poppo said. “We would also like to congratulate our Orvis Award winners and all of our recent graduates, and wish them the very best in the next step of their life’s journey.”

Five graduating students earned the Orvis Award for Excellence in scholarship, service, leadership, and character. This award honors Paul B. Orvis, a former president of Alfred State and State University of New York dean for two-year colleges.

The following is a list of 2018 Orvis Award winners and their achievements:

  • Cory Farley, Cold Brook – electrical construction and maintenance electrician (AOS)

Achievements include being a Presidential Aspiring Leaders program member, and serving as a peer tutor and student ambassador.

  • Carina Scalise, Baldwinsville – construction management (BS)

Achievements include induction into Tau Alpha Pi, Sigma Lamda Chi, and Phi Kappa Phi honor societies; serving as president of the Alfred State chapter of the Associated General Contractors of America, secretary of the WE are Pioneers club, and Pioneering Paths mentor; and receiving an Outstanding Student Award.

  • Amber Sirline, Angelica – interior design (AAS)

Achievements include being a member of the National Society of Leadership and Success, the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, and the Women in Non-Traditional Studies (WINS) club; and working in the Office of Student Engagement.

  • Kylie Buchek, Windsor – health sciences (BS)

Achievements include earning the Health Sciences Student of the Year award, and being a member of the Phi Kappa Phi honor society and the Psi Sigma Psi sorority.

  • Bailey Winslow, Warren, PA – agricultural business (AAS)

Achievements include being a member of the National Society of Leadership and Success, the Collegiate Agricultural Leaders club, and the Alfred State Show Club; and receiving the Most Outstanding Student Award.

The college congratulates all of the students who earned dean’s list and Orvis Award honors. The students’ hometown newspapers receive information regarding honorees, including details for each student earning a perfect 4.0 GPA.
