Wrestlers Finish Tied for 4th at Regionals

The Alfred State College wrestling team finished tied for 4th place at the Region III/Northeast Distict Championship held at Niagara CCC on Sunday, February 15.  Three Pioneers have advanced to compete in the NJCAA National Championships.

The Alfred State College wrestling team finished tied for 4th place at the Region III/Northeast Distict Championship held at Niagara CCC on Sunday, February 15.  Three Pioneers have advanced to compete in the NJCAA National Championships.

Mike Gustafson (Warren, PA) was the top Pioneer finisher earning 2nd place at 133 lbs..  He defeated Nick Marouski (Springfield Tech) 9-3 in the semifinals but fell 7-1 to Dan Audy (Niagara CCC) in the finals.  He finishes the regular season with a 12-9 mark.

Cody Lansberry (Kendall), Dan Dwyer (Lafayette), and Darren Whittall (Starpoint) all earned 3rd place finishes in their weight classes. 

  • Lansberry fell in his first match to the eventual champion at 157 lbs but rebounded for a 2-0 victory over Joe Goyette (Jamestown CC) and a pin of Matt Krysiak (Mercyhurst North East) at 3:30 to earn 3rd place. 
  • Dwyer fell 4-2 to Martin Giboo (Jamestown CC) in his first match but rebounded for a 5-2 victory over Mike Powell (Mercyhurst North East) in the 3rd place match.
  • Whittall lost a tough 3-2 decision to Brian Gaines (Mercyhurst North East) in his only match at 141. 

The Pioneers scored 30 points on the day and tied with Jamestown CC.  Niagara CCC won the championship with 118 points.

Gustafson earned the automatic spot at the NJCAA National Championships while Dwyer and Whittall were given wild card selections.  The trio along with coach George Porter will travel to Rochester, MN on February 27-28 for the two-day national championship.
