The Alfred State College wrestling team finished 16th out of 18 teams at the annual New York State Championships this weekend at SUNY Oswego. The Pioneers scored five points in the event that features wrestlers from every New York school that sponsors a wrestling program (NJCAA, NCAA Division I and NCAA Division III).
Dan Steiger (Miller Place) and Dan Dwyer (Lafayette) each earned victories in the tournament.
- Steiger, competing in the 184 lb. weight class, fell to the #2 seed Nate Holley (Cornell) in the first round but bounced back by pinning Bill Touhy (Morrisville). His tournament ended in the next round when he fell to Tom Heckman (Ithaca).
- At 197 lbs. Dwyer fell to #2 seed Brian Scher (Hunter) in the first round but bounced back with a pin of Mark Wagner (Wagner) in 2:02. His tournament ended in the next round when he fell 11-5 to Joel Ford (Oswego).
The Pioneers have 10 days off before returning to the mats on January 28 when they travel to Jamestown CC for a 7 p.m. WNYAC match-up with the Jayhawks.
