The 2008 Alfred State College annual charity basketball game will be colored pink. Proceeds of the 3rd annual event to be held April 2 will be donated to the Kay Yow WBCA Cancer Fund. The "Think Pink" Charity game will tip off at 7 p.m. in the Orvis Activities Center.
The game will feature a faculty and staff team, including basketball coaches Gina Boyd and Jerry Jusianiec, taking on the intramural champions. Admission to the event is a $2 minimum donation.
Charity Basketball committee member Paul Welker and the rest of the committee are excited about the event. "Everyone knows someone that has been touched or effected by breast cancer. We believe we have a great night scheduled and we hope that not only the college community supports the event but that people from all around the southern tier come out for the evening."
The game is scheduled to be four quarters with entertainment and contests in between each quarter. Scheduled to perform at the event are the Alfred State Steppas, the Alfred Dance Team, and the Japanese Dance Team. Contests for both kids, students, and adults will be organized by the college's sports management students with prizes for the winners. Fans that wear pink or purchase a breast cancer bracelet to the event will get double the chances to participate in the contests.
Kay Yow, North Carolina State University head women's basketball coach, is a past president and founding member of the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA), and a galvanizing voice for the Association. Yow was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1987, and is currently battling the disease for the third time. In her 37 years as a head coach at the college-level, Yow is one of only six Division I head women's basketball mentors to achieve 700 career victories. Yow was also the head coach of the 1988 US Olympic Team that won the gold medal in Seoul. The Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund, in partnership with The V Foundation for Cancer Research, will raise money in the fight against cancer.
Colleges around the country have held "Think Pink" nights or charity events to help raise funds for the Kay Yow Fund.
In 2006, the Alfred State College charity game raised $250 for the American Cancer Society while in 2007, $747 was raised for the Trisomy 18 organization.
