Students enrolled in the culinary arts: baking, production and management curriculum at Alfred State College for the fifth consecutive year entered a variety of gingerbread houses in the 10th Annual Gingerbread…Gifts…Glitz…at Gilda’s Club Event held in Buffalo earlier this month.

The event, which broke previous event records for both attendance and donations, received a donation of $10,856 from the 24 local artists who participated in the event. Each artist donated 20 percent of his or her gross sales from the four-day event that drew more than 2,600 visitors.

As part of the Gingerbread event, Gilda’s Club WNY sponsored a gingerbread house-making contest. A total of 55 entries were received in three baker categories: amateur (15), student (high school and college) (34), and professional (6).

The gingerbread houses were judged by Kathy Lawley Best (Lawley Insurance); Clotilde Perez Dedecker (Community Foundation of Greater Buffalo); Marge Zelman (Realty 1); Dominic Cortese (Cortese Brothers), and Ann Swan (community volunteer).

Cash prizes totaling $1,650 were awarded to the top three winners in each category; all gingerbread houses were auctioned during the weekend event, with proceeds benefiting Gilda’s Club.
