Special teams, especially the punting game, played a huge role as Alfred State defeat Stevens Tech 32-13 to improve to 2-1 on the year.

Stevens got on the board first on a 38-yard pass play to Austin Cseh from Zachary Guiles.

Alfred answered back on their next drive when Erik Simmons (Elmira Free) caught a 25-yard pass from Joey Frendo (Fremont, MI) to make it 7-6 (PAT blocked).  Dileel Bartley (Rochester/Edison) gave the Pioneers the lead for good when he caught a 26-yard scoring pass from Colton Caldwell (Dublin, OH) (two-point conversion failed).

Colin Frazer (Woodbridge, VA) added to the lead a few minutes later when he returned a punt 87-yards for the score.  The punt return for a score was Frazer’s second of the season.

The Bulldogs scored in the final minute of the 1st half on a 30-yard pass play to Cseh from Guiles to make it 18-13 at half.

The Pioneers were the only team to dent the scoreboard in the 2nd half.  All 14, 2nd half points were directly the result of punting miscues by Stevens.

David Howell (Rochester/Greece Athena) recovered a botched punt attempt to make it 24-13 (two point conversion failed).

Minutes later, Frendo dove in from one-yard out to make it 30-13 (two point conversion failed).  Frendo’s score came two-plays after another botched punt gave the Pioneers the ball on the one yard line.

The Pioneers capped the scoring when another punt was mishandled and resulted in a safety.

Caldwell rushed for 39 yards on four carries and caught four pass for 47 yards.  He also was 2 for 3 with a touchdown pass.  Frendo was 7 for 14 for 88 yards and a score.  Bartley finished with 41 yards rushing on eight carries while Simmons had 48 yards receiving.

Howell led the defense with ten tackles, a sack, and a fumble recovery.  Michael Gibson (Capital Heights, MD) had nine tackles, Frazer had eight tackles and a sack, and Robert Howard (Syracuse/Nottingham) had eight tackles.

Alfred has next week off and returns to action on October 7th when they host St. John Fisther JV in their 2012 home opener.
