The Alfred State College men's basketball team downed Genesee CC in a hard fought WNYAC battle, 98-95 in overtime. With the win the Pioneers improve to 18-10 (7-6 WNYAC) while the Cougars fall to 12-14 (8-5 WNYAC).
Genesee led by as many as 14 in the first half and Alfred led by as many 13 in the second but the game went down to the wire in regulation. With the game tied at 84-84, Dan Foley (Irondequoit) gave ASC a one-point lead by hitting one of two foul shots. Boris Calhoun gave GCC the lead when he hit a lay-up with 56 seconds remaining. Panyon Makur made it 87-85 by making one of two foul shots. As time wound down, Fran Lantigua (Jamestown) was fouled with seven seconds remaining. He missed the first of a one-and-one but the rebound went to Travis Brannen (Elmira Free) who hit the lay-up to tie the game. Both teams had the ball in the final seconds but neither could score.
Lantigua came up big in the overtime scoring seven of the Pioneers 11 points. His offensive rebound and three-point playbroke a 94-94 tie with 1:02 remaining. Genesee cut it to 97-95 and had three shots to tie or take the lead but were unable to capitalize. Foley grabbed the game-winning rebound with just over two seconds remaining and hit one of two foul shots to seal the victory.
Lantigua led the Blue and Gold with 21 points and 10 rebounds while Brannen chipped in 19 points and eight boards. Jerome Hall (Cicero North Syracuse) had a huge game finishing with 18 points including 4 three-pointers. Foley added 16 points off the bench while Dusty Marshall (Newfield) had 13 points, 11 rebounds, and seven assists.
Makur led all scorers with 27 points and seven boards while Josh Henderson finished with 20 points. Richard Westbrook had a double-double with 17 points and 11 boards while Reid Houston and Boris Calhoun each added 12 points.
ASC shot 44.4% from the field, 42.3% (11 for 26) from three, and 62.5% from the foul line while GCC shot 44.9% from the field, 32.3% from three, and 75% from the line. The Cougars held a slight 49 to 47 advantage on the boards.
The Blue and Gold close out the regular season on Saturday with a 3 p.m. tip-off versus Niagara CCC.
