The Alfred State baseball team scored four runs in the pivotal 5th inning to defeat Broome CC 5-3 in a Region III Division III contest in the rain on Sunday afternoon.  The Pioneers are now 3-10 on the year and 2-1 in RIII DIII play.

Broome broke a 1-1 tie with two runs in the 5th inning but the blue & gold responded with a rally of their own.  Daiki Iizuka (Chiba, Japan) doubled and scored on two errors by the Hornets.  Later in the inning with two outs and runners on 2nd and 3rd, Jordan Wheaton (Wayland Cohocton) doubled to give the Pioneers their first lead of the game.  Greg Koller (Chesterland, OH) followed that up with a RBI single to give Alfred a two-run cushion.

Ruben Mizrahi (Weston, FL) made that stand up and collected the final out to seal the victory.  He earned the win out of the pen with three innings of work in which he allowed two hits and two walks while striking out four.  He came out of the bullpen in relief of Eric Mehaffy (Lisbon) who allowed three earned runs on four hits in four innings  of work.

Wheaton and Koller both finished 2 for 3 on the day for the Pioneers.

Game two of the doubleheader was rained out.

The Pioneers are home again on Tuesday when they host Tompkins Cortland CC at 2 p.m. in another Region III Division III doubleheader.
