Pioneers Split with King's

The Alfred State baseball team got the offense going in game two of a split at King's College on Sunday.  After falling 2-1 in the opener to the JV Monarchs the Pioneers exploded for a 15-3 victory in the nightcap to earn the team's first win of the season.

Leading 2-0 heading into the 3rd, the Pioneers scored 10 in the inning to put the game two of the doubleheader out of reach. Brett Rapan (Bolivar Richburg) and Garrett Hoag (Dansville) each connected on three-run bases clearing doubles to spearhead the big inning.  Daiki Iizuka (Chiba, Japan) led the blue & gold with a 3 for 3, 3 RBI day whlie Hoag was 2 for 3 with 4 RBI.  Greg Koller (Chersterland, OH) was 2 for 3 with 2 RBI and Rapan was 1 for 3 with 3 RBI.

Ruben Mizrahi (Weston, FL) earned the victory with three innings of three hit ball.  He walked none and struck out two while allowing just one earned run.

In the opener the Pioneers were unable to take advantage of a solid performance by Hoag on the mound and at the plate. Hoag tossed a complete game four hitter but took the loss.  He walked three and struck out four in six innings of work.  He also was 2 for 3 with two doubles and the Pioneers lone RBI.

The blue & gold (1-9) open up Region III Division III play next weekend when they battle Broome CC in a four-game series.  The series begins on Saturday in Binghamton at 2 p.m. and continues on Sunday with a doubleheader at Alfred at 1 p.m.
