The Alfred State College baseball team split a Region III Division III doubleheader versus Jamestown CC on Saturday dropping the opener 7-1 and winning the nightcap 5-1.

The Alfred State College split a Region III Division III doubleheader versus Jamestown CC on Saturday dropping the opener 7-1 and winning the nightcap 5-1.  The Pioneers are now 7-4, 3-1 Region III Division III on the season.

In the opener, JCC jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first two innings benefitting from Pioneer walks, hit by pitches, and two costly errors.  Mitch Kippolla (Ithaca) tossed all seven innings after settling down after the first two innings.   He allowed seven hits and five earned runs while walking three and striking out four.   Andrew Alexander (LeRoy) was 2 for 3, Anthony Espe (Union Endicott) was 2 for 4, and Garrett Hoag (Dansville) drove in the lone run.

Ruben Mizarahi (Weston, FL) tossed a complete game two-hitter.  He allowed one earned run while walking three and striking out three.

The Pioneers got all the runs they needed in the first on a two-run single by Kevan Smith (Cicero North Syracuse).   JP Frey (Erie, PA) led the way with a 3 for 4, 2 RBI day while Dennis Dueno (Brooklyn/Bishop Ford) was 2 for 3 with two runs scored.

The Pioneers and Jayhawks continue their four-game series on Sunday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader to be played again on the turf at Bolivar Richburg High School.
