Pioneers Split Four in Florida

The Alfred State College baseball team split four games as they continue their southern trip in Cocoa Expo.  The Pioneers defeated Miami (OH) Middletown 17-8 and Jamestown CC 12-4 but fell 5-4 to Milwaukee (WI) Area Tech and 5-2 to UCONN Avery Point.

The Alfred State College baseball team split four games as they continue their southern trip in Cocoa Expo.  The Pioneers defeated Miami (OH) Middletown 17-8 and Jamestown CC 12-4 but fell 5-4 to Milwaukee (WI) Area Tech and 5-2 to UCONN Avery Point.

Berto Vargas (Norman Thomas) led the offensive attack vs. Middletown.  He was 3 for 5 with a single double, and a triple.  He scored three times and drove in two.  Brian Zimmerman (Frontier) was 2 for 2 with a bases clearing triple and four RBI.  Kenny O'Brien (Norwalk, CT) was 2 for 3 with an RBI while Jake Dale (Keshequa) hit a triple and drove in two.  Kyle Binder (Hornell) tossed three perfect innings striking out two to earn the win.  ASC jumped out to a 14-0 lead after two innings.

Joe Wallace (Avoca) picked up the victory with six solid inning versus Jamestown.  He allowed eight hits, two earned runs, and struck out seven.  Dale and Steve Smith (Hornell) were each 3 for 3 with a single, double, a triple, and a RBI to pace the offense.  Vargas was 2 for 4 with 2 RBI while Karl Kofmel (Ottawa, ONT) drove in two with a triple.

Smith and Dale were each 2 for 4 in the tight loss to Milwaukee Area.  Smith scored twice while Dale drove home a run.  Vargas was 1 for 4 with a RBI double.  Binder tossed three solid innings of relief to keep the blue and gold in the game.  He struck out four and allowed just one hit.

O'Brien and Kofmel were each 2 for 2 with a RBI versus UCONN Avery Point.  Andrew Foster (Mississauga, ONT) took the loss on the mound.  He threw five innings and allowed two earned runs while striking out eight.

The Pioneers (2-3) continue their trip on Monday with a 1 p.m. contest with Riverland (MN) CC.
