Pioneers Roll Past Hartwick JV

Cody Scepaniak (Vestal) and Josh Griffin (Englewood, NJ) connected on four touchdown passes and Sir Aaron Taylor (West Chester/Lincoln Hall) scored twice as the Alfred State football team rolled past Hartwick JV 56-23.  ASC is 2-0 for the first time since 2006 with the victory.

Taylor started the scoring just over a minute into the game when he returned an interception 50-yards for a score.  Hartwick tied it right back up before Scepaniak and Griffin connected on a 17-yard pass play six minutes into the game to make it 14-7.

Hartwick tied it back up less than two minutes later but the Pioneers took the lead for good with back to back scoring drives.  Scepaniak ran in from four-yards out and then hit Griffin on a 2-yard scoring pass to make it 28-14 (the scoring drive was keyed by a blocked punt by Brett Harrington (Rochester/Edison).  The Hawks recorded a safety to cap the scoring in the 1st quarter.

Scepaniak hit Griffin for their third scoring strike with 9:15 left in the 2nd for the lone scoring in the quarter.

Scepaniak and Griffin connected on a 5-yard scoring play with 9:04 remaining in the 3rd to make it 42-16.  Hartwick scored four minutes later but never would get any closer.

Taylor added to the lead when returned a kick-off 87-yards for his second kick return touchdown in two weeks and Emmanuel Magliocco (Rochester/Aquinas) capped the scoring by diving in from two yards out in the 4th quarter.

Scepaniak finished 14 for 23 for 151 yards and rushed for 62 yards on nine carries.  Griffin had five catches for 65 yards while Corey McWilliams (Erie, PA/Fort Leboeuf) caught four passes for 54 yards.  Caleb Meroski (Lake George) added 61 yards rushing on 13 carries.

Rory Spain (Tully) led the defense with eight tackles and a sack while Taylor finished with seven tackles, a fumble recovery, and the interception.  Emmanuel Wells (Erie, PA/Strong Vincent) finished with six tackles and a sack, Damion King Jr. (Detroit, MI/Madison Heights) had six tackles, and Kyle Ricks (Alexandria, VA/Mt. Vernon) added five.  Andrae Simpson (South Bronx) picked off a pass while Randall Wilkie (Buffalo/East), Claxton Duval (Rochester/Bishop Kearney) and Ryan Rodney (Binghamton) all recorded a sack.

The Pioneer offense accumulated 383 yards of total offense (208 rushing and 176 passing) while Hartwick had 223 total yards (-14 rushing and 237 passing).

The Pioneers will return home on Saturday for Homecoming 2010.  The blue & gold open up Northeast Football Conference play versus Erie CC with opening kickoff at 7 p.m.
