Pioneers Rally but Fall in OT

The Alfred State lacrosse team trailed 10-5 to SUNY Delhi in the 3rd quarter but rallied to the send game into overtime tied at 12-12.  #10 Delhi escaped Pioneer Stadium with the victory after James Varnesi scored from his knees with 52.6 seconds remaining in OT.

The Pioneers trailed 4-2 after the 1st, 9-5 at halftime, and 11-8 after 3rd.  Delhi scored the first goal in the 4th but the Pioneers scored the next four to tie the game.  Chance Lowry (Waterloo) scored three times and Mike Hart (Ajax, ONT) scored once and had three assists in the 4th quarter run to tie the game.  Lowry's 3rd goal of the quarter tied the game with 1:21 remaining.  Alfred State had the ball in the closing seconds of regulation but could not find the back of the net.

Delhi's game winning goal came immediately after a Bronco timeout.  David Fernandes took the ball to the net and while falling found Varnesi who scored from his knees to improve Delhi to 5-1 on the year.

Hart finished with two goals and five assists to lead the Pioneers offense while Lowry had five goals and an assist.  Jordan Napierala (West Irondequoit) had two goals while Kyle Davis (Cortland/Homer), Lance Elithorpe (Shaftsbury, VT), and Brad Zacher (Medina) all scored once.  Brad Stowell made 18 saves in net for the blue & gold.

Sean Brown finished with four goals and two assists for Delhi while Fernandez had three goals and two assists.  Varnesi recorded a hat trick as well.  Sean Igoe made 17 saves for the Broncos including eight in the 4th quarter.

The Pioneers conclude their three-game homestand on Monday when they host the JV squad from Elmira College.  Opening faceoff is at 4 p.m. at Pioneer Stadium.
