Pioneers keep Regional Championship Lead

The Alfred State College indoor track & field team competed in the Region III Championship for the weight throw and the 200 m dash and in the Cornell Open on Saturday in Ithaca.  After three events of the Region III Championship the men and the women are in 1st place.

The Alfred State College indoor track & field team competed in the Region III Championship for the weight throw and the 200 m dash and in the Cornell Open on Saturday in Ithaca.  After three events of the Region III Championship the men and the women are in 1st place.

In the 200 m dash, Rob Riley (Edison Tech) and Najia McGee (Edison Tech) won regional championships.  Riley finished in 23.06 while McGee finished in 26.77.  Alvin Flemming (Eastridge) and Dan Fabiny (Wellsville) both finished in 23.58 to tie for 3rd place.  

In the weight throw, Nate Smith (Clymer) finished 2nd on the men's side with a toss of 12.36 while Tyrell Davis (Mt. Vernon) finished 4th (12.03 m).  Emily Fields (Red Creek) earned a 2nd place in the women's competition with a throw of 9.78 m.

The men now have 50 points after three events of the Regional Championship.  Erie CC has 20, SUNY Cobleskill has 19, and Mohawk Valley and SUNY Delhi have 2 each.

The women's team now has 26 points.  Mohawk Valley and SUNY Cobleskill each have 18 points, SUNY Delhi has 16, and Erie CC has 7.

In other action at the Cornell Open, Flemming set a new school record in the 60 m dash.  He finished 4th with a time of 6.96. Andy Omoregie (Gates Chili) finished 5th in the long jump (6.55 m) and Jermaine Thomas (Union Endicott) finished 5th in the high jump.

Some members of the Pioneers will head back to Cornell University on Saturday for the Kane Invitational while most of the team will compete on Sunday at the completion of the Region III Championships at Hudson Valley CC.
