Pioneers Hang Tough but Fall to Rockland

The Alfred State men's basketball team slowed down Rockland CC's high octane offense but the Hawks were able to pull out a 60-51 victory in a 1st round Alfred State Tournament contest.  The Pioneers are now 2-3 on the year.

The Alfred State men's basketball team slowed down Rockland CC's high octane offense but the Hawks were able to pull out a 60-51 victory in a 1st round Alfred State Tournament contest.  The Pioneers are now 2-3 on the year.

Alfred was able to slow down the pace in the 1st half and held a 25-20 advantage at the break.  Rockland heated up in the 2nd half and went on a 16 to 4 run to take the lead.  The Pioneers threatened but could never gain the lead back.

Jamar White (Laurel, MD) led the Pioneers with 20 points on 9 for 11 shooting.  Tommy Hutson (Brooklyn/Susan McKinney) came off the bench and had eight points while Marquis Chatman (Allen, TX) had five points and 11 rebounds.

Jayson Quijada led all scorers with 29 points for Rockland.  Marcus Cruz added 12 points while Justin Guzman finished with 10. 

Alfred shot 39.6% from the field but was just 7 for 18 from the foul line.  Rockland shot 31.1% from the field but hit 18 of their 28 foul shots.

Rockland, who entered the contest averaging 107 points per game, will play Fulton Montgomery CC at 2 p.m. on Sunday in the championship game.  FMCC defeated Monroe College JV 71-67 in the other first round game.  Alfred tips off vs. Monroe College JV at 10 a.m. in the consolation game.
