Pioneers finish 4th, Longenecker named Most Outstanding Wrestler

The Alfred State College wrestling team finished 4th in the team standings at the annual ASC Open.  Sophomore Gallaway Longenecker (Manheim, PA) was the Pioneers lone weight class winner bringing home the championship at 133 lbs.

The Alfred State College wrestling team finished 4th in the team standings at the annual ASC Open.  Sophomore Gallaway Longenecker (Manheim, PA) was the Pioneers lone weight class winner bringing home the championship at 133 lbs.

Longenecker improved to 13-2 on the season with his two victories.  He downed Mike Capaboanco (Mercyhurst Unattached) 8-4 in the semifinals and then downed James Henderson (Mercyhurst North East) 8-3 in the finals.

Devin Hennssey (Bridgewater Raynham, MA) was 2-1 on the day and earned a 2nd place finish in the 141 lb. weight class.  He downed Shaun Spath (Mercyhurst North East) 13-4 in the first round and then downed Andrew Hutchins (Ithaca) 6-3 in the semifinals.  In the finals he fell in a tight match 4-2 to Ryan Donovan (Mercyhurst North East).

Scott Ray (Hornell) finished 3rd at 157 lbs.  He fell in his first match 17-4 to eventual champion Steve Andolena but rebounded to record a technical fall, 18-3 over Cory Washington (Albany) in the 3rd place match.

Jordan Hughson (Holley) also earned a 3rd place finish.  He was fell in his first match at 184 to Key McPherson but rebounded to beat Alex Rosenberg (Ithaca) 13-0 and then won a rematch 7-3 over McPherson in the 3rd place match.

Mercyhurst North East won the team trophy with 118.5 points while Ithaca College finished 2nd with 68 points.  Jamestown CC finished 3rd with 49, ASC 4th with 49, Niagara CCC 5th with 13.5, and Albany 6th with 13.

The Pioneers will not return to action until January 18 when they compete in the New York Collegiate Championship at the University of Buffalo.
