Pioneers fall to Monroe in the Pool

The Alfred State College men's swimming team hung tough with Monroe CC but fell 111-80 in their lone home meet of the 2007-08 season.  On the women's side, the two Lady Pioneers swimmers netted 37 points but fell 97-37.

The Alfred State College men's swimming team hung tough with Monroe CC but fell 111-80 in their lone home meet of the 2007-08 season.  On the women's side, the two Lady Pioneers swimmers netted 37 points but fell 97-37.

Kailtyn Corbitt (Clarence) won two events and finished 2nd in another to pace the women's team.  She won the 100 free (59.96) and the 100 backstroke (1:10.17) and finished 2nd in the 50 free (27.01).  Teammate Becca Mastasio (Livonia) won the 100 breaststroke (1:24.29) and 2nd in the 200 free (2:15.03).

On the men's side Phillip Valenta (Maine Endwell) and the 200 medley relay earned first place finishes.  Valenta won the 100 breaststroke (1:11.64) while Alex Newell (Binghamton), Valenta, Paul Congdon (Bath), and Brett Kozlowski (N. Tonawanda) won in a time of 1:51.1.

Newell finished 2nd in the 100 free (52.53), Congdon finished 2nd in the 50 free (24.40), Brett Au (N. Tonawanda) finished 2nd in the 200 butterfly (1:15.75), and Sean Valvano (Newark) finished 2nd in the 100 breaststroke (1:11.76).  Kevin Minderlein (Salesianum) finished 2nd in the 1,000 free (12:29.19) and 3rd in the 500 free (6:10.23).

The men's 400 free relay (Congdon, Valenta, Kozlowski, and Newell) same an impressive time of 3:34.12.

The Pioneers return to action on Saturday when they travel to the SUNY Cobleskill Invitational.  Action begins at 1 p.m.
