Pioneers complete Series Sweep of Mercyhurst

The Alfred State College baseball team completed a four game sweep of Mercyhurst North East with 5-3 and 13-8 victories on Saturday.  The Pioneers improve to 17-12 overall and 6-2 in Region III Division II play.

The Alfred State College baseball team completed a four game sweep of Mercyhurst North East with 5-3 and 13-8 victories on Saturday.  The Pioneers improve to 17-12 overall and 6-2 in Region III Division II play.

Mercyhurst North East broke a 2-2 with a run in the top of the 7th inning but Berto Vargas (Norman Thomas) connected on a walk-off three-run homer in the bottom of the inning to propel the Pioneers to the victory.

Andrew Foster (Mississauga, ONT) allowed three runs on five hits in seven innings of work to pick up his fourth victory of the season.  Jake Dale (Keshequa) was the lone Pioneer with multiple hits finishing 2 for 2 with an RBI.

Kenny O'Brien (Norwalk, CT) led Alfred State's 15-hit attack in game two with a 3 for 4, 6 RBI day.  Joe Wallace (Avoca) was 3 for 3 with a RBI and Karl Kofmel (Ottawa, ONT) was 3 for 4 with 2 RBI.  Vargas was 2 for 3 with 2 RBI, Brian Zimmerman (Frontier) was 2 for 3, and Dale connected on a two-run homer.

Kyle Binder (Hornell) struck out nine in five innings of work to improve to 5-1 on the year.  He allowed two earned runs and allowed seven hits.  Mark Cicotti (Horseheads) came out of the pen with the bases loaded in the 7th to record the final out and earn the save.

The Pioneers scheduled opponent for Sunday, Ithaca College JV, forfeited the doubleheader so Alfred State will return to action on Tuesday at 1 p.m. when they take on Genesee CC.
