Tyler Ward (Rochester/Bishop Kearney) earned his first collegiate victory as the Alfred State College baseball team defeated Milwaukee (WI) Area Tech 6-1 in Cocoa, FL. The Pioneers improve to 3-1 on the season.
Ward allowed just three singles in six innings of work to earn the victory. He walked four and struck out four batters. He was helped by an 11 hit offensive attack. Brian Zimmermann (Frontier) was 3 for 4 with two triples while JP Frey (Erie, PA/McDowell) and Kyle Barkley (Penn Yan) were each 2 for 4.
Milwaukee mounted a comeback attempt in the 7th loading the bases with no outs but the Pioneers turned a triple play behind Ray Sova (Syracuse/West Genesee) to close out the contest.
The Pioneers play a split doubleheader on Tuesday with a 10 a.m. contest versus Massasoit (MA) CC and a 1 p.m. game versus North Iowa Area CC.
