Alfred State and Genesee CC split a Region III Division II doubleheader at Alfred on Tuesday afternoon.  The Pioneers were held to five hits and fell 8-0 in the opener but bounced back for a 2-1 victory in the nightcap.

Alfred State and Genesee CC split a Region III Division II doubleheader at Alfred on Tuesday afternoon.  The Pioneers were held to five hits and fell 8-0 in the opener but bounced back for a 2-1 victory in the nightcap. 

Ed Kohout limited Alfred State to just five hits in a seven inning shutout while Chris Page was 3 for 4 with 4 RBI to pace the offense.  Five different Pioneers collected singles in the contest.

In the nightcap, Jake Dale (Keshequa) singled home Ray Sova (West Genesee) with the game winning run in the 5th inning.  Sova had doubled to lead off the inning and advanced to third on a Berto Vargas (Norman Thomas) fly out.

Joe Wallace (Avoca) went the distance on the mound to pick up the victory.  He allowed six hits and one earned run while striking out five Cougars.  Sova and Dale each finished 2 for 3 with a RBI.

Alfred State is now 20-13 overall and 7-3 in Region III Division II play while Genesee is 19-8 and 6-4 in RIII DII play.  The two teams meet again on Saturday at Dwyer Stadium to close out the four game set.

Prior to the match-up with GCC on Saturday, ASC will host Broome CC in a non-conference game on Thursday.  First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
