high school students were the guests of Alfred State College recently as they
began the first phase of a new technology and business competition to be
completed on April 7.  The competition, intended to provide an opportunity
for high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors to showcase their technology and
business skills, includes two aspects, (1) the design and construction of a
robot and (2) the production of a business plan for the robot. On Feb. 26, the
team and faculty from each school visited Alfred State's Wellsville campus to
receive the design kits, competition regulations, and judging criteria and were
treated to lunch prepared by Alfred State College culinary arts students.
On Tuesday, April 7, 2009, the teams and faculty will reconvene at the Alfred
State College campus in Alfred to showcase their creations.  Some of the
preliminary criteria for the competition include: one four-member team per
school; all materials for the project will be supplied by Alfred State College;
the technology component of the project will consist of robot design and construction;
and the business component of the project will be a business plan for the
device (i.e. company name, mission statement, marketing materials, etc.).
