Men 3rd, Women 5th at Region Championships

The Alfred State College men's cross country team finished 3rd while the women finished 5th as the teams competed in the rain and mud at the Region III Championships on Saturday morning in Utica.

The Alfred State College men's cross country team finished 3rd while the women finished 5th as the teams competed in the rain and mud at the Region III Championships on Saturday morning in Utica.

John Sweeney (Barker) was the top male finisher.  He crossed the line of the 5-mile race in 9th place in 30:14.  Adam McDevitt (Fabius Pompey) finished 16th (31:24) closely followed by Corey Smith in 17th (31:28).  Logan Drummer (Pioneer) earned 20th place (32:00) and Peter Francia (Greece Olympia) rouned out the top five with a 23rd place finish (32:10).

SUNY Delhi won the event with a score of 16 followed by Mohawk Valley CC's 75 points.  ASC scored a 78 followed by Broome CC (103), Finger Lakes CC (104), and Herkimer CCC (177).

Ashley Fung (Greenwich) led the women with a 6th place finish on the 5K course with a time of 21:51.  Kaleigh Ligoci (Cicero North Syracuse) finished 18th (23:24), Colleen Hurtubise (Williamsville) was 25th (23:54), Bridget McMahon (Avoca) was 31st (24:20), and Maria Wilson (Addison) finished in 24:26 to earn 32nd place.

Mohawk Valley CC won the women's race with a score of 35 followed by Broome CC (70), SUNY Delhi (78), Finger Lakes CC (98), and Alfred State (106).  Hudson Valley CC (153), Erie CC (181), and Herkimer CCC (220) rounded out the competition.

The Pioneers now have two weeks to prepare for the NJCAA Division III National Championships that will take place November 8 at the CC of Rhode Island.
