Men 2nd, Women 3rd at FLCC Invite

Both the Alfred State men's and women's cross country teams fared well at the Finger Lakes Invitational on Saturday.  The men finished 2nd and the women 3rd out of seven teams.

Both the Alfred State men's and women's cross country teams fared well at the Finger Lakes Invitational on Saturday.  The men finished 2nd and the women 3rd out of seven teams.

The men's team scored 45 and trailed only Mohawk Valley CC's 34.  They finished ahead of Broome CC (74), Erie CC (84), Finger Lakes CC (130), Herkimer CCC (172), and Bryant & Stratton (Inc.).

John Sweeney (Barker) finished in 3rd place to pace the Pioneers.  He ran the 8k course in 28:08 and trailed the overall winner, Todd Butters (MVCC), by 13 seconds.  Logan Drummer (Pioneer) finished 7th (29:09), Peter Francia (Greece Olympia) was 10th (29:21), Alex Farrell (N. Tonawanda) was 12th (29:43), and Brandon Lewis (Red Creek) was 13th (29:51).

The women's team scored a 51 to earn 3rd place behind Broome CC (42) and Mohawk Valley CC (44).  Herkimer CCC finished in 4th with 95 while FLCC, ECC, and Bryant & Stratton were incomplete.

Bridget McMahon (Avoca) crossed the finish line of the 5k course in 7th place just under a minute behind overall winner Hannah Hoffman (Mohawk Valley).  Her time was 22:05.  Abby Benton (Frewsburg) was 10th (22:20), Carrie Crooker (Addison) was 12th (22:42), Maria Wilson (Addsion) was 16th (23:29), and Laura Babcock (Wellsville) was 20th.

Running at Finger Lakes was a preview of the 2009 NJCAA Division III National Championships that will be held in Canandaigua in November.

The Pioneers travel to Houghton College for the Highlander Invitational beginning at 10:30 a.m.
